Sare for U.S. Senate Campaign Files 45K-Plus Petition Signatures for N.Y. November Ballot Status
May 31, 2022—The Sare for Senate campaign is pleased to announce that the superhuman efforts of our supporters has resulted in gathering well over 45,000 signatures of duly registered New York State voters to place Diane Sare’s name on the ballot as a challenger to Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer.
While ballot placement cannot be confirmed until after the challenge period has passed, Sare believes that the successful petition campaign constitutes a major breakthrough, given that the new requirements were designed to prevent independent and minority party candidates from being able to comply.
She told her supporters, “This is not a requirement which could have been met by paid ‘professional’ petitioners because it was impossible. Only people committed to going the extra mile, standing in the rain, putting in extra long hours, and making sometimes great personal sacrifice could possibly have done this.”
Sare has described the tripling of the signature requirement for statewide races as “sadistic,” saying that for the past six weeks, she has been unable to do anything but focus on the petition drive. “There was no time to attend events, unless I could get signatures, no money for advertising, and the pace of gathering the signatures had to be such that petitioners really had no time to engage with the population. This requirement is designed to silence people, at a moment when we are facing deadly hyper-inflation and possible thermonuclear war. We saw people almost in tears as they exited the grocery stores after having to eliminate items to be able to afford to put gas in their cars.”
